The 1st Forum “Language Policy and Linguistic Security” was held on September 26-27, 2017, hosted by the Linguistics University of Nizhny Novgorod. The event attracted scholars not only from Russia but also from France, Germany, Slovenia, China, South Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, Belarus, Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic, and others.

The participants discussed a number of topical issues, e.g. linguistic security and globalization; political aspects of enhancing linguistic security in Russia; language policy in the modern world as well as Russia and Russian culture on the international arena; modern linguistic, psychological and pedagogical techniques and methodical aspects in foreign language teaching.

There were 19 workshops during the 1st Forum, and their number proved its topicality:

Workshop 1: Linguistic security basics.

Workshop 2: Foreign policy and linguistic security.

Workshop 3: Domestic policy and linguistic security.

Workshop 4: Implementation of linguistic security policy.

Workshop 5: Linguistic security and globalization.

Workshop 6: Linguistic aspects of migration and integration.

Workshop 7: Political, social and religious discourses as areas for cross-cultural communication.

Workshop 8: Language culture as a means of ensuring domestic linguistic security.

Workshop 9: A foreign language as a way to enhance cultural and educational competitiveness of young generation.

Workshop 10: Teaching foreign languages: problems and prospects.

Workshop 11: Psychological and pedagogical foundations of foreign language acquisition.

Workshop 12: The role of a foreign language teacher in shaping and developing students’ foreign language competence.

Workshop 13: Linguistic security and issues of cultivating pupils’ cross-cultural competence.

Workshop 14: Modern techniques in FLT.

Workshop 15: International cooperation in education.

Workshop 16: International cooperation programs in foreign language education.

Workshop 17: Teaching Russian as a foreign language: traditions and prospects.

Workshop 18: Reflection of the Russian world in the Russian language.

Workshop 19: Problems of ensuring information security.

As a result, the participants of the forum agreed on its importance and relevance and decided to meet annually.

So, the participants met again on September 25-26, 2018 when the 2nd International Scientific-Educational Forum “Language Policy and Linguistic Security” was held.

This time the format of the meeting was changed, and expert groups were created to become a tradition of the Forum. The groups are dedicated to:

  • Philological and other related problems in the context of linguistic security.
  • Psychological and pedagogical, and methodical aspect of linguistic security.
  • Linguistic security as a part of theory of translation.
  • Linguistic security as a part of language culture fostering. Teaching Russian as a foreign language: traditions and perspectives.
  • Political aspects of linguistic security.

Proceedings of the Forum (registered in Russian Science Citation Index) were released after the forum both in 2017 and in 2018. Some papers were recommended for “Vestnik of Nizhny Novgorod Linguistics University”, a scientific magazine included in the Russian Higher Attestation Board list.
